Our purpose is to promote commuter rail in East Central Indiana. Our group has been meeting to talk about the possibility of commuter rail service from Anderson and Muncie to Union Station in downtown Indianapolis.
Public transportation options are increasingly important as our economy and demographics change. More and more people are commuting to worksites through out Central Indiana. Many from Muncie commute to jobs in Indianapolis and beyond while central city residents are finding jobs outside Marion County. Ball State students, senior citizens and people of all ages will benefit from more transportation alternatives. In the short run, express busses like those from Fishers to Indianapolis are a real possibility. Commuter rail on the CSX line from Muncie to Indianapolis is being studied by consultants under a contract with the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Indiana General Assembly passed a bill two years ago to study transit needs in each region of the state. A part of the resolution called for a study of commuter rail options between Indianapolis and Muncie as well as between Indianapolis and Bloomington.
Over the past two years, the Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority (CIRTA) has been exploring options to improve public transportation in the nine county Central Indiana Region. CIRTA will be the agency developing the light rail line between union station in downtown Indianapolis and Noblesville , a line which we hope will be running by 2012.
Good public transportation throughout Central Indiana is an important issue for all of us. Public transit including light rail, commuter rail and bus service as well as van pools, car pools, bicycling and walking are all important options. You are invited to join our conversation about public transportation, commuting needs as well as economic development and help us influence the future.
We meet informally to share ideas and learn about public transportion in Central Indiana. Each month we discuss issues raised at the board meetings of the Central Indiana Regional Tranportation Authority, we exchange information on local public transit sytems such as MITS and CATS as well as the New InterUrban operated by Life Stream Services providing dial-a-ride van services in seven counties served by the Area Agency on Aging. We also discuss commmuter rail services in other regions similar to Central Indiana
Our next meeting be in the Anderson City Hall on Monday, December 7th at 3:00 PM.
